A Letter That Says You Can Be Bonded

A pre-qualification letter comes from a surety company and states the dollar amount of bonding capacity you qualify for — both per project and in total. General contractors and public agencies often ask for one before they'll let you bid.

It is not a bond. Nothing is filed and nothing is purchased. It's a statement of what you'd be approved for if you did need a bond. There's no cost and no obligation.

Who this is for

Contractors bidding on construction work — general, sub, public, or private. If you're looking for a license bond, notary bond, court bond, or any other non-construction bond, you want the bond directory instead.

Have These Ready

The application moves quickly if you have this on hand. Nothing here is unusual — it's what every surety asks for.

  • Business financials — last three fiscal year-end statements. CPA-prepared is best, but internally prepared works for smaller capacity requests.
  • Current work-in-progress schedule — jobs underway, contract amounts, percent complete, and estimated completion dates.
  • Completed jobs list — your last few finished projects with contract values and owner names.
  • Contractor license number and the state it's issued in.
  • Personal financial statement for each owner with 10% or more ownership.
  • Bank line of credit information, if you have one.

Missing something? Start anyway. We can work with what you have and follow up on the rest.
